Posted on October 27th, 2008 in Uncategorized by kselander

We have finished the first quarter and we’re going to be starting prehistory and early civilizations soon. However, our national stage is set right now for a great learning opportunity in civics. We’ll be spending most of this week focusing on the US presidential election–what the issues are, how we feel about them, how the election might impact the international community, etc.

Homework:

Monday: Find a current event article about the presidential election and bring it to class on Tuesday. We will use these to help analyze the top issues of the election. Students that do not have access to newspapers or internet at home need to visit the library or computer lab during lunch or before/after school to print their article BEFORE class.

What’s going on in class week of 8/25

Posted on August 27th, 2008 in Uncategorized by kselander

Welcome to my Global Studies 1 CP class and Team 5! I am very excited to have my students this year–they look like a great crew! The first few weeks we’ll be: working on refreshing map skills, making a classroom wall map, beginning current events, and learning about the world one region at a time.

Textbooks will be issued soon–this time students will have a choice of a traditional book OR a CD-ROM that can be used at home. We will have a classroom set of textbooks so that students won’t have to bring them back and forth. Supplies that are needed for my class include: 3 ring binder with notebook paper, pencils/pens, and occasionally poster board. I also recommend that students have a flash/jump drive that can hold and transport files easily.

Assignments:

Current events article: students need to find an article about another country, read it, and write a brief description on notebook paper telling the 5 W’s: who, what, when, where, and why. This was assigned on Monday and is due Thursday, August 28th at the beginning of class. Reminder: there is no late HW accepted on Team 5, so don’t wait until the last minute!!

“My 5 Themes” Collage Activity: On Wednesday, students learned about the 5 Themes of Geography: movement, region, human/environment interaction, location, and place. To help make this topic relevant to students, they will create a collage that shows how the 5 Themes apply to their lives and homes. This counts as 2 homework grades and is due on Tuesday, September 2nd.
