There is an article about registration fees today in The Summerville Journal Scene (here is the link: http://www.journalscene.com/news/0723NEregistration), so I guess I should include some information about it here.   The dates for meet the teacher (open house for us) are also included in this article.

End of the Year (please don’t cry)

Well, it is almost the end of the year.  Here are a few things to note:

  • Students that missed the test on The Odyssey must have it made up by Thursday, but the sooner the better!
  • Late notebooks had to be turned in today (May 27)
  • There will be no English I exam given on May 30, June 2, June 3, or June 4, because English I students took the EOC exam given by the state last week.  That was the exam and counts 20% of the students’ average for the year.
  • Therefore, students do not have to report to my class during their scheduled exam time next week.  They need only fill out a permission form and turn it in. (more…)

Odyssey Test and Notebook

The test on The Odyssey will be given on Friday, May 23.  The notebooks are due on that day, also, but we will most likely finish the work for that notebook this week.  If we do, students may turn those in early for extra credit.  This is the last test and notebook of the fourth quarter.  Here are the checklist and study guide for this unit:

English I EOC

Posted on May 12th, 2008 by esummers.

The English I EOC exam will be given during 1st-3rd periods on Wednesday, May 21.  I will post a schedule that will show students what room to report to on the testing day.  4th-8th periods will remain the same.  This is not a timed test, so students that are not finished at the end of 3rd period will be moved to another location, probably the Media Center.  Remember, when the scores return, this will count as 20% of each student’s final average for the year.

More Extra Credit

This is due on Wednesday, May 21, the day students will be taking the EOC for English.  Students can use this sheet (Odyssey and O Brother Where Art Thou Comparison Chart) to compare The Odyssey with the movie O Brother Where Art Thou.  Students that do not have access to the movie because of inability to rent it, etc., can see me to set up a time to watch it before or after school in installments over the next week.

Quiz on Part One of The Odyssey

Posted on May 9th, 2008 by esummers.

We completed reading Part One of The Odyssey today in class.  Students should review their summaries (these are a part of the notebook) so that they can do well on the quiz.  It will have ten true-false questions and ten short answer questions.  Also, please look at the checklist and notebook with your student to make sure that he or she is keeping up.  This will be the last notebook for the quarter!

More Extra Credit - Due on May 16

Posted on May 7th, 2008 by esummers.

Against my better judgment, I have decided to offer one more opportunity for extra credit.  This - Odyssey of Life - is an essay.  The essay assignment and guide are on the first page; the rubric is on the second page.  If this is done correctly and well (based on the rubric), I will replace a test, paper, or notebook grade.

Intro to the Odyssey Quiz tomorrow - 5/7

Today in class we completed this worksheet Introduction to The Odyssey as an introduction to The Odyssey.  Students will complete a 10 question quiz on this information tomorrow.  If students have the sheet completed, they will be able to use the worksheet on the quiz, so this should require no studying.

Benchmark Test/Collection 10 Test

Posted on April 28th, 2008 by esummers.

Good afternoon.  The benchmark test has been changed to Wednesday, April 30.  Students will be given fifty minutes to respond to a writing prompt.  The reason for this change is that the Collection 10 test has been moved to Friday, May 2.  I didn’t want to rush into a test on Collection 10 the day after we finish the last poem, but I also didn’t want to give students two tests in one day.
